9 road traffic command and control gestures by traffic police in Vietnam from January 1, 2025
(1) The gesture of signaling the prohibition of traffic in all directions (following Forms No. 04A, 04B, and 04c enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
(i) Stand at attention;
(ii) Blow a long and strong whistle; at the same time, the right hand holds the stick close to the body, slowly turns forward clockwise, and raises up, palm facing the top of the head, the stick is upright, and the left arm hangs straight along the seam of the pants. This gesture has the effect of prohibiting traffic for people and vehicles in all directions.
Where people and vehicles are still circulating within the traffic intersection, they shall be permitted to leave the intersection quickly. At the traffic intersection where stopping positions are prescribed for people and vehicles, they must comply with such positions.
(2) The gesture of permitting traffic (following Forms No. 05A, 05B, and 05C enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
After the order to prohibit traffic in all directions (when people and vehicles have left the intersection, excluding intersections where stopping positions are prescribed for people and vehicles), traffic shall be permitted, and the duration shall depend on the traffic volume and situation in all directions. The gesture is as follows:
(i) From the position of the gesture of prohibiting traffic in all directions;
(ii) Blow a short and quick whistle; at the same time, gradually raise the left arm, the right hand holding the stick turns forward counter-clockwise until hitting a T-pose, the right hand holding the stick forms a straight line parallel to the ground, palm facing down. When performing the gesture of permitting traffic, if the permissible time is plenty, the police officer commanding and controlling traffic may put one arm down. The gesture of permitting traffic is an order for people and vehicles on the left and right of the police officer to move; people and vehicles at the front and the back of the police officer must stop.
(3) The gesture of signaling the right side to move faster (following Form No. 06 enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
From the gesture of permitting traffic, bend the right arm from the elbow to the hand in front of the chest; the right arm and the stick on the right hand are straight, then straighten the arm similar to the gesture of permitting traffic, the right arm must bend at least 3 times, each combined with three short and quick whistles with eyes facing the right.
(4) The gesture of signaling the left side to move faster (following Form No. 07 enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
From the gesture of permitting traffic, bend the left arm from the elbow to the hand toward the back of the neck; slightly raise the arm, palm facing the back of the neck, then straighten the arm similar to the gesture of permitting traffic, the left arm must bend at least 3 times, each combined with three short and quick whistles with eyes facing the left.
(5) The gesture of signaling the right side to slow down (following Forms No. 08A and 08B enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
hangs straight along the seam of the pants, right palm facing down, move the right hand up and down at least three times, each combined with two short and strong whistles, eyes facing the right.
(6) The gesture of signaling the left side to slow down (following Forms No. 09A and 09B enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
From the gesture of permitting traffic, the left arm moves to the waist level, palm facing down, move the left hand up and down at least three times, each combined with two short and strong whistles, eyes facing the left.
(7) The gesture of signaling the right side to stop (following Form No. 10 enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
From the gesture of permitting traffic, gradually rotate the right wrist in a vertical direction, perpendicular to the arm, combined with a long and strong whistle to signal vehicles on the right to stop, eyes facing the right.
(8) The gesture of signaling the left side to stop (following Form No. 11 enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
From the gesture of permitting traffic, gradually rotate the left wrist in a vertical direction, perpendicular to the arm, palm facing the left, combined with a long and strong whistle to signal vehicles on the left to stop, eyes facing the left.
(9) The gesture of signaling vehicles to turn left and overtake (following Forms No. 12A, 12B, and 12C enclosed with Circular 69/2024)
(i) From the gesture of permitting traffic, gradually turn the right hand holding the stick forward at shoulder level, palm facing down, combined with a strong and long whistle. Gradually raise the left arm forward, from the bottom to the top, the arm straight, palm facing down; gradually tilt the palm to a vertical position and move the arm back and forth at least three times, each combined with a short whistle, eyes facing the left where vehicles are allowed to turn left and overtake;
(ii) With this gesture, vehicles and people on foot from the right and behind the police officer must stop; at the front, vehicles may turn right; on the left, vehicles may go in any direction.
