This is the highlight of the Circular No. 21/2020/TT-BYT regarding guidance on the pre-certification medical practice training for medical practitioners.

According to this document, the practice training periods required to qualify for the general practitioner’s practicing certificates (granted to those who obtain the doctor of medicine, the doctor of general medicine or the bachelor of medicine after completing supplementary training sessions as per Circular No. 42/2018/TT-BYT) are regulated as follows:

Total training practice period of 18 months will be divided into the time length spent on practicing their medical knowledge at specific specialized departments:

- Period of practicing at the internal medicine department, including the emergency department:  5 months.

- Period of practicing at the surgery department: 3 months.

- Period of practicing at the obstetrics and gynecology department: 3 months.

- Period of practicing at the pediatrics department: 4 months.

- Period of practicing several techniques at other departments (e.g. otorhinolaryngology, dental and maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology and venereology, functional recovery, traditional medicine):  3 months.

Circular No. 21/2020/TT-BYT will enter into force on January 15, 2021, repealing the practice training period regulated in Article 15 in the Circular No. 41/2011/TT-BYT prescribing that general practitioners must register their practice training at one of four departments, such as internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, or at one of the branches like internal medicine – pediatrics or surgery – obstetrics.

In case of practicing at medical branches, total practice training period will be 18 months, including at least 9 consecutive months' practicing at each department belonging to a branch.
