Regulatory requirements concerning professional qualification of family medicine practitioners about to take effect

On August 21, 2019, the Ministry of Health promulgated the Circular No. 21/2019/TT-BYT providing instructions on family medical practices.

The Circular sets out regulations on professional qualifications and certifications of training in family medicine as follows:

- Persons already issued with practicing certificates and providing medical services before October 15, 2019 may be granted continuation in their medical practices and must be updated on knowledge about the family medicine sector for at least 3 months.

- General practitioners or medical specialists trained in clinical specialties who are issued with medical practicing certificates will be eligible for carrying out family medical services in the following cases:

+ Holding one of resident doctor, medical specialist I, II, master and doctorate degrees in the family medicine major;

+ Obtaining certifications of completion of training in the family medicine sector for at least 3 months;

+ Holding certificates of completion of each training session about academic modules inscribed on transcripts or credits of the family medicine field of study with the minimum duration of 03 months.

- Preventive medical practitioners already issued with medical practicing certificates before and after October 15, 2019 and obtaining certificates of training in family medical services for at least 3 months may be entitled to provide family medical services at the levels of communes, wards or towns.

The Circular No. 21/2019/TT-BYT is entering into force on October 15, 2019.
