Cases in which goods are prohibited from export or import released

These are highlighted contents of the 2017 Law on Foreign Trade Administration passed by the 14th National Assembly on June 12, 2017.

Pursuant to this Law, goods falling into the following cases will be subject to import prohibition:

- Goods have not been permitted for import for national defence and security reasons by a state regulatory authority.

- Goods are likely to harm consumer’s health and safety.

- Goods are likely to cause adverse effects on social order, safety, moral standards and traditional values.

- Goods are likely to endanger environment, biodiversity, have high risks of importing harmful organisms, threaten the food safety, manufacturing and export industry of Vietnam as well as infringe intellectual property rights. 

- Goods are prohibited for import under international treaties of which Vietnam is the member state. 

Additionally, this Law sets out regulations on goods prohibited from export in the following cases:

- Goods have not been permitted for export for national defence and security reasons by a state regulatory authority.
 
- Goods are prohibited from export for reasons of conservation of national relics, antiques and treasures as prescribed by the law on cultural heritage.

- Goods are prohibited from export under international treaties of which Vietnam is the member state. 

The 2017 Law on Foreign Trade Administration is due to come into force from January 1, 2018.
